Vikings Makeup 101 Tutorial
In anticipation of the upcoming Minnesota Vikings season, we sat down with Minneapolis-based makeup artist Fatima Olive to get her recommendations on how to create the ultimate Vikings game face using makeup for an easy, fun—and of course—purple and gold look!
For an easy, step-by-step instructions for a simple yet bold V, follow Option 1. For anyone who is interested in a less traditional and more glammed-up version, follow Option 2.
While you can easily do either option yourself, Fatima recommends teaming up with a friend to help achieve your desired look.
Here's how to create your Vikings game face in 8 simple steps or less!
Option 1: Purple and gold V = Victory for the Vikes!
Step 1: Use tape to create a deep V on your forehead.
Start at the top of your hairline and intersect between your eyebrows. “The tape creates a clean edge and acts as a guide when applying the makeup,” said Fatima.
Step 2: Apply a ¼ inch yellow line along the edges of the tape.
Fatima recommends going over the line a couple of times to make sure the color is consistent. “I would work it a little bit into the hairline,” she said. Don’t worry about going over the tape. “It’s just like using a marker,” she said. “Super easy to use and if you mess up, just take if off and try again.”
Step 3: Apply a ½ inch thick purple line above the yellow V.
Step 4: With a thin, white pencil, outline the purple V to make it pop.
Step 5: Repeats Steps 1–4, making an inverted V on the bottom of the chin.
Step 6: Carefully remove the tape.
Step 7: Enjoy the game!
Option 2: Glammed-up Vikings fan
How to braid your hair—warrior style
Braids have been making a huge comeback in recent years, so this a great way to show your Vikings spirit while still staying on trend. To mix it up, create a reverse French braid instead of a traditional braid.
Step 1: Divide your hair into three even sections.
Brush your hair first before separating the sections. Use clips to help hold everything in place. This also ensures a clean line.
Step 2: Start braiding one of the side sections of your hair—crossing the strands under the middle piece instead of over.
Tip: Try to keep all the sections around the same size to keep the braid looking even.
Step 3: Repeat Step 2 on the other side.
Step 4: Tease the top section of the hair for some added oomph and dimension.
There’s a huge difference between teasing hair and tangling hair. Fatima suggests using a whipping motion, just like you would whisk an egg. “If you do it correctly, you should be able to brush it out really easily.”
How to create a smoky purple and gold eye
Note: Before you begin with the eyes, apply your makeup how you normally would.
Step 1: Apply a purple pencil along the lash line, eyebrows, and in the corner of the eyes.
Tip: Wing the eyebrow a little bit to resemble a Vikings horn. A jumbo eye pencil works perfectly for this step.
Step 2: Using a thick yellow pencil, apply the color to the base of the eyelid and underneath the brows. Gently blend the purple and yellow together using your finger.
Step 3: Apply purple or white eyeliner and purple mascara. (When else do you have an excuse to wear purple mascara?!)
Step 4: Apply purple eyeshadow on top of the purple layer. This will prevent from any creases forming.
Step 5: Add gold glitter for some extra sparkle.
Tip: Using a brush or the top of your finger, gently apply gold glitter on top of the yellow shadow.
Step 6: Finish the look with purple lips.
Tips: Prep the lips with lip balm before applying the lipstick. “This will help make sure the lipstick goes on evenly,” said Fatima. Apply the lipstick on the lips. Because purple is such a pigmented color, you won’t need much. Fatima recommends applying purple gloss to add a little shine. “Add more gloss at the center of the lips to give them a fuller effect,” she said.
How to turn a manicure into a fanicure
In order to turn any manicure into a Vikings fanicure, you need these two essentials: purple and yellow nail polish. Any brand will work, but Fatima loves NYX’s royal empire and rain boots. “They are complementary colors so they make each other cooler and brighter. Plus, nails are a perfect option for someone who doesn’t want anything on the face.”
Nail art doesn’t have to be complicated. Follow these simple steps for a simple yet bold look:
Step 1: Apply nail polish, alternating yellow and purple on every other finger.
Tip: You will need two coats of yellow since it’s sheerer, but only one coat of purple. Allow paint to completely dry before proceeding to the next step.
Sept 2: Paint a purple tip on the yellow nails.
Tip: Gently follow the curve of your nail with the tip of the brush.
Step 3: Apply a yellow dot on the center of the purple nails.
Tip: Use the tip of a small brush to apply the dot for easy application.
